Duvid*, Duvid Crockett, King of Delancey Street.*

Duvid, Duvid Crockett, this boy you got to meet. 

*Duvid is the Southeastern Yiddish (Poland, Ukraine) pronunciation of David.

*At the turn of the 20th century, (link to  map) Delancey Street was the center of immigrant Jewish life on the Lower East Side of New York City. 

Born in the wilds of Delancey Street

Home of gefilte fish* and kosher* meat 

Handy with a knife, oh her zikh tsi* 

He flicked him a chicken, when he was only three 

*Gefilte fish (link to a recipe) means “stuffed fish”  but nowadays is minced fish balls.

*Kosher = ritually clean foods prepared according to the laws in Leviticus; in slang it means “okay, good, legit” 

*her zikh tsi= listen up! 

Duvid, Duvid Crocket, he sat in the sun un* gerocket* un gebaket.

*un=and

*gerocket is Yinglish (Yiddish + English) for rocked as in a rocking chair 

*gebaket=baked, here “sat in the sun” 

In eighteen thoiteen he fought Indianers*

Then came the Litvaks* and the Galitsianers* 

Avekgeharget* Redskins all over the shtetl*, He never lost his head, he never lost his sheytl* 

*Indianers=Native Americans

*Litvaks are Lithuanian Jews 

*Galitsianers are Jews from Galicia in Southern Poland/Western Ukraine 

*Avekgehargt=killed off 

*Shtetl=town, small city 

*Shaytl/sheytl=a wig worn by married women 

Duvid, Duvid Crocket, he chewed tobaccy and gehist un gekhraket

*gehist=coughed

*gekhraket=spit 

He went down south, looking for a meydl,

Met a little tsatskele called Daisy Freydl 

From near and far, they came to the khipi 

Elected him president of the B’nei Mississippi 

 

*meydl=young woman (unmarried)

*tsatskele=trinket, knick-knack, (unpleasant) slang for woman 

*Freydl=endearment of the name Freyde (joy) 

*khipi=a play on khupe (wedding canopy) in a Polish accent, so it would rhyme 

*B’nei Mississippi=literally “children of the Mississippi”, here it’s a play on the naming of synagogues, often B’nei ...

A mazel tov der mame* und der alter Crocket, Mazel tov, Duvid Crocket, king of Delancey Street. 

 

*Mazel tov=congratulations

*Der mame=to (his) mother 

*der alter=the elder

He went up west on his ferdele* Shleym,

Took along Freydele* his vaybele sheyn, Shleym hut geflit* vi* an aeroplane, he got to Las Wegas* ahead of the train 

*ferdele=either really little horse, or dear horse

*Shleym=here, the horse’s name 

*Freydele=dear Freydl 

*vaybele sheyn=dear, pretty wife 

*hut geflit=flew 

*vi=as, like 

*Las Wegas=a hypercorrection, Yiddish speakers pronounce Ws as Vs 

Duvid, Duvid Crocket, he walked up to the crap table with a full pocket,

Duvid, Duvid Crocket, king of Delancey Street. 

 

 

He shot like a gambler, eyner af der velt*

Up came two sixes, in dr’erd di gelt* 

He felt very sad, that's my opinion 

He would have said Kaddish* but he couldn't find a minyan 

 

*eyner af der velt=one of a kind, unique

*in dr’erd di gelt=to Hell with the money 

*Kaddish=mourner’s prayer 

*minyan=a quorum of ten adult men 

Duvid, Duvid Crocket,  farlorn di heysn* he went home naket,

Duvid, Duvid Crocket,  he's back on Delancey Street 

*farlorn di heysn=lost his pants

*naket=naked
